New appointments
Professor Dai Jianguo was appointed Chair Professor of Structural Engineering in the Department of Architecture and Civil Engineering, effective from 8 January. Professor Dai’s research theme is “Emerging Material and Structural Systems for Sustainable Concrete Infrastructures”. More specific research interests include Fiber Reinforced Polymer (FRP) Composites, Fiber-reinforced Cementitious Composites, and Durability and Life Cycle Maintenance of Marine Concrete Structures.
Professor Niels Olaf Schiller was appointed Chair Professor of Psycho- and Neurolinguistics and concurrently, Head of the Department of Linguistics and Translation, effective from 2 February. Professor Shiller is a world leader in the field of psycho- and neurolinguistics. His research interests include syntactic, morphological, and phonological processes in language production and reading aloud, articulatory-motor processes during speech production, language processing in neurologically impaired patients, and forensic phonetics.
Professor Rebecca Traub was appointed Chair Professor of Parasitology and concurrently, Head of the Department of Infectious Diseases and Public Health, effective from 5 February. Professor Traub is a renowned scholar, whose research covers veterinary public health, focusing on the diagnosis and epidemiology of emerging parasitic and vector-borne zoonoses.

CityU won the “Silver Award” and “Award for Promotion” in the category of “Other Types of Buildings” under the “Commendation Scheme on Source Separation of Commercial and Industrial Waste 2022/23”. The aim of the Scheme, which is organised annually by the Environmental Protection Department, is to encourage commercial and industrial premises to monitor the effectiveness of their existing mechanisms and to keep improving their waste separation and recovery arrangements.
Professor Stella Pang was elected a Fellow of the Hong Kong Academy of Engineering Sciences (HKAES) 2023, in recognition of her eminent leadership in low-damage nanofabrication technology for microsystems and devices and for her record as an outstanding educator in Electrical Engineering and STEM. HKAES is an organisation of Hong Kong’s most eminent engineers in various disciplines who are recognised leaders in the profession with distinguished achievements in engineering sciences or applications. A total of 13 Fellows were elected in 2023.
Ma Tianlu, PhD student in the Department of Electrical Engineering, was awarded the First Prize and Best Presentation Award at the 2nd IEEE PELS Student Symposium on Power Electronics in Asia. The winning project, supervised by Professor Jiang Chaoqiang, is titled “Periodic Energy Control: A Novel Control Strategy for Wireless Power Transfer System”. The symposium aims to promote student exchanges and development in the field of power electronics in Asia.
