Appointment
Professor Vanessa Rosemary Barrs has been appointed as Chair Professor of Companion Animal Health and Disease. Professor Barrs assumed duty on 18 November. She received her Bachelor of Veterinary Sciences, Master of Veterinary Clinical Studies and PhD from the University of Sydney. She was Head of Small Animal Medicine at the University of Sydney, where she was also Professor of Feline Medicine & Infectious Diseases and Director of the University Veterinary Teaching Hospital.

Professor Luk Kwai-man, Chair Professor of Electronic Engineering in the Department of Electrical Engineering, has been conferred the 2019 Prize for Scientific and Technological Progress by the Ho Leung Ho Lee Foundation, a Hong Kong-based non-government organisation established in 1994. The award recognises Professor Luk’s significant contributions on the design and analysis of microstrip antennas, magneto-electric dipole antennas, and dielectric resonator antennas.
Two projects won the Gold Award in the Hong Kong Innovation Technology Achievement Award by the Hong Kong Federation of Innovative Technologies and Manufacturing Industries in November 2019. They are “Microfluidics Array Technology with Nano-Amplification for Drug Screening and Molecular Diagnosis” developed by a research team led by Professor Michael Yang Mengsu, Yeung Kin Man Chair Professor of Biomedical Sciences (BMS); and “Self-healable Anti-smudge Coatings” developed by a research team led by Dr Yao Xi, Associate Professor in BMS.
Nikil Senthilkumar, a Year 3 student in the Department of Electrical Engineering (EE), teamed up with other local students to win the J.P. Morgan Code for Good Challenge 2019. J.P. Morgan software engineers will further develop the winning project, a CRM system prototype created for the non-government organisation Premiere Performances, for commercialisation purposes. Dr Ray Cheung Chak-chung, Associate Professor in EE, has advised and coached Nikil since he was a Year 1 student.
Zhang Yiqing, a final-year student in the Department of Electrical Engineering (EE), has been awarded Second Prize at the 16th "Challenge Cup" National College Students’ Extra-curricular Academic Science and Technology Contest. The winning project supervised by Dr Alan Lam Hiu-fung, Adjunct Professor in EE, was called “Smart Baseball Training System”. The Challenge Cup is a biennial competition held in the mainland since 1989. The theme this year was “Challenge for Dream, Innovation for Country”.
