Honorary Fellows 2019
The award of the title of Honorary Fellow will be bestowed on three persons in recognition of their distinctive contribution to the development of, and service to, the University. They are Professor Cliff Sun Kai-lit, BBS, JP; Mr Herbert Tsoi Hak-kong, BBS, JP; Dr Yip Kit-chuen. The Honorary Fellow Presentation Ceremony will be held on 17 September.
Rankings
CityU has risen two spots to become ranked #5 in the 2019 Times Higher Education Young University Rankings. This set of rankings lists the world’s best universities that are 50 years old or younger. In addition, we are ranked #63 in the world and #1 in Hong Kong in the Top 100 Worldwide Universities Granted U.S. Utility Patents Report for 2018, announced by the National Academy of Inventors and the Intellectual Property Owners Association. Appointments
Professor Dennis Wong Sing-wing, Acting Dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences, has been appointed Campus Grievance Officer with effect from 1 July. He will be responsible for administering, coordinating and facilitating the implementation of the Grievance Procedures. He will also be the first point of contact to receive complaints and to advise on mediation and filing procedures.
Professor Eric Chui Wing-hong has been appointed Dean of Students with effect from 1 August. This appointment is concurrent with Professor Chui’s appointment as Professor in the Department of Social and Behavioural Sciences. Professor Chui will advise on and implement policies relating to student affairs, promote student success, and coordinate student development across all administrative units under the Vice-President (Student Affairs).
New department
The Department of Neuroscience was established on 1 July 2019 under the Jockey Club College of Veterinary Medicine and Life Sciences.
International THE conference
Top leaders from around the world will share their insights at CityU at the “Leadership and Management Summit” organised by CityU and Times Higher Education (THE) from 17 to 19 July. The Summit, which is themed “Managing Universities in the 21st Century: Strategies and Innovations”, is divided into four sub-themes: “Leading universities to greatness: the future of governance”, “Managing universities for success”, “Financing the future university – changes on the horizon” and “Engagement to advance your institution”. HKIAS Distinguished Lecture
Myocites, a class of heart cells, oscillate independently when put into a petri dish but after some time nearby cells will have similar oscillatory behaviour. This lecture looks at how to devise a mathematical model of synchronisation to help understand this phenomenon. The speaker, Professor Stephen Smale, Professor Emeritus at the University of California, Berkeley and Senior Fellow of CityU’s Hong Kong Institute for Advanced Study, and his talk, to be held on 4 July, is titled “The Heart, Beating in Unison, and the Mathematics of Synchronization”. Professor Smale is one of the few mathematicians to win both the Fields Medal and Wolf Prize in mathematics. For more details, please click here.
