Jockey Club College of Veterinary Medicine and Life Sciences
A ceremony will be held on 20 August to mark the naming of the Jockey Club College of Veterinary Medicine and Life Sciences (JCCVMLS). Launched in 2014 in collaboration with the prestigious College of Veterinary Medicine at Cornell University, JCCVMLS is committed to training students in veterinary medicine based on the One Health concept. Officiating guests at the ceremony will include Mrs Carrie Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor, Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR); Mr Carlson Tong Ka-shing, Chairman of the University Grants Committee; and Dr Simon Ip Sik-on, Chairman of The Hong Kong Jockey Club.
New appointment
Professor Felipe Cucker was appointed as Head of the Department of Mathematics from 1 September 2018 to 31 August 2021. Professor Cucker obtained his PhD degree from the University of Rennes in France. He joined CityU in 1996 and is currently Chair Professor of Mathematics.
Structural Engineering Competition for Youth 2018
NLSI Peace Evangelical Secondary School was named the Champion in the Structural Engineering Competition for Youth 2018— Wooden Tower Challenge on 14 July at the Li Dak Sum Yip Yio Chin Academic Building. Over 150 participants from 30 teams/schools joined the competition, which was co-organised by the Structural Division of The Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (HKIE), Education Bureau, and CityU’s Department of Architecture and Civil Engineering. This was the first time for CityU to host this annual competition.
Naming ceremony
In recognition of the donation made by alumnus Mr Wilson Yuen, an applied research centre under the Department of Computer Science will be named after Mr Yuen’s company TFI as the “TFI Applied Research Centre for Advanced Digital Media Technology”. The naming event is scheduled for 9 August.
Kudos
Dr Guo Luo of the Department of Mathematics received the SIAM Outstanding Paper Prize from the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM). The SIAM Outstanding Paper Prizes are awarded every year to the authors of the three most outstanding papers published in SIAM journals.
PhD student Zhou Xinyu of the Department of Electronic Engineering (EE) won the Second Place in the 14th High Efficiency Power Amplifier Student Design Competition. His winning project, supervised by Dr Chan Wing-shing, Associate professor in EE, is called “Broadband High Efficiency Post-matching Doherty Power Amplifier Based on Mixed-Topology”. The winner received an award at the same competition last year.
In addition, EE PhD student Nabeel Siddiqui won the Second Prize in the IEEE EMBS Hong Kong-Macau Joint Chapter Student Paper Competition 2018. The winning paper, supervised by Dr Rosa Chan Ho-man, Associate Professor in EE, was titled “Hand Gesture Recognition Based on Multi-band Acoustic Sensors at Wrist”.
Two teams of students of the Department of Computer Science (CS) joined the “2018 Intel Cup Undergraduate Electronic Design Contest - Embedded System Design Invitational Contest” and both won the Second Prize. Hang Ching-nam, Lau Lee and Cheung Ka-ho’s winning project was “Intelligent Farming: Automatic Fruit Disease Detection System”; while Chan Wing-sze, Wong Man-fai and Fan Cheuk-hang’s winning project was “Animal Healthcare Monitoring System Based on Visible Disease Symptoms”. The teams were supervised by Dr Tan Chee-wei, Associate Professor in CS.
The CityU Underwater Robotics Team has won the Third Prize in the 3rd Underwater Robot Competition which was held in Shanghai, China. The winning team, comprising five EE students and four students from CS, Department of Mechanical Engineering and Department of Materials Science and Engineering, was supervised by Dr Ray Cheung Chak-chung, Associate Professor of EE; Dr Angus Wu Kwok-ming, Assistant Professor of EE; Dr Pakpong Chirarattananon, Assistant Professor of the Department of Biomedical Engineering (BME) and Dr Shen Yajing, Assistant Professor of BME.
