Nano 2018: XIV International Conference on Nanostructured Materials
The NANO Conference, spearheaded by the International Committee on Nanostructured Materials, brings together nanomaterials researchers for the latest findings in the field. A range of topics at the frontier of knowledge in the field of nanomaterials will be discussed and a wide number of scientific talks will be given by distinguished scientists in plenary and parallel sessions. Professor Lu Jian, Chair Professor of Mechanical Engineering in the Department of Mechanical and Biomedical Engineering and Vice-President (Research and Technology) at CityU, is chairing the local, national and international organisation committees. IAS Materials Summit
The Materials Summit, organised by the Institute for Advanced Study (IAS), will run concurrently on 27 June with NANO 2018 (see above) at CityU, bringing together ten renowned materials scientists to explore future trends in advanced materials science and engineering. International Conference on Applied Mathematics 2018
This conference reviews the latest trends in the fields of fluid mechanics, large data, wave and computation, mathematics and the mechanics of solids. William Benter Prize
Professor Ingrid Daubechies, James B. Duke Professor of Mathematics and Electrical and Computer Engineering at Duke University, has become the first female recipient of the William Benter Prize in Applied Mathematics 2018, awarded by CityU. A pioneer in mathematical applications used to detect art forgery, Professor Daubechies is a prominent supporter of encouraging greater interest in maths among women from developing countries. The prize was presented during the opening ceremony on 4 June at the International Conference on Applied Mathematics 2018 (see above). She delivered a talk titled “Biologically relevant distances between morphological surfaces representing teeth and bones” after the prize presentation ceremony, marking the beginning of the five-day conference on applied mathematics.
Computer Science Challenge 2018
Students from Chan Sui Ki (La Salle) College won a territory-wide competition organised by CityU's Department of Computer Science for secondary school students on coding, computational thinking skills and mathematics. This fun and challenging contest brought together 210 secondary school students from 75 schools at the event on 26 May at CityU. For more information, visit here.
Cabinets of Curiosities
A journey through time and space is presented at a new exhibition that reveals European collectors’ fascination with exotic animals, plants, minerals and art objects unknown in the West until a few hundred years ago. “The Cabinets of Curiosities. From the Natural Sciences to the Art of Nature. Collections from France and Hong Kong” introduces Hong Kong audiences to over 250 natural and artificial artefacts from 10 museums, galleries and private collections. Organised in collaboration with Le French May Arts Festival, the exhibition is open until 19 August at CityU Exhibition Gallery.
Kudos
Professor Zhang Xiuyin, PhD graduate in 2009, has been awarded the Guangdong Youth (May 4th) Medal. During his studies in CityU’s Department of Electronic Engineering (EE), Professor Zhang researched novel RF resonators and bandpass filters for wireless communications under the supervision of EE’s Professor Xue Quan. He is currently a full professor and Deputy Dean of the School of Electronic and Information Engineering at South China University of Technology.
