Applications for Master of Science in Energy and Environment for entry in September 2025 is accepted from 16 September 2024. The deadline for both local and non-local applicants is 31 Jan 2025. The programme is offered in 2-year part-time and 1-year full-time study mode. Local students and non-local students admitted in 2025-2026 are required to pay a tuition fee of HK$6,200 per credit unit.

The programme emphasizes a balance of both technical and soft sciences. Students are required to complete four core courses (total of 12 credit units). Further to this, students are also required to complete additional 18 credit units either as six elective courses (3 credit units each), or four elective courses (3 credit units each) and a Dissertation (6 credit units).

Programme Aims

This programme aims to equip students with the necessary knowledge and skills in the areas of energy and environment, with special reference to the Asian settings. In particular, the programme caters to the rising demand from the business and industry sectors for managers with contemporary views on energy, environment and sustainability. Besides emphasis on technical sciences, graduates of the programme are equipped with holistic knowledge in the related energy and environmental aspects of economics, policies and laws. Based on such knowledge, the graduates can develop innovative and creative solutions to various energy and environmental problems.

 

Programme Intended Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this Programme, students should be able to:

  1. Master the underlying technical principles and analysis techniques governing energy generation, usage and environmental technologies and apply the knowledge on sustainable development 
  2. Exhibit an ability to identify and integrate major factors affecting the atmosphere, climate and water quality
  3. Stay abreast of contemporary economics and ethics, relevant policies and laws both at international and national levels in addressing energy and environment problems and  issues  
  4. Critically assess and balance the impacts of implementation of energy and environmental technologies and policies on sustainability
  5. Demonstrate expertise on energy supply, demand and security issues and their associated environmental impacts in a global and societal context
  6. Elaborate the development of innovative technologies that can generate clean and sustainable energy to address energy scarcity and combat pollution and climate change 
  7. Synthesize a broad view of energy, environment and climate change problems and issues through discussions and presentations
  8. Detail innovative and creative solutions to energy and environmental problems through teamwork or projects.

 

Admission Requirements

Applicants should have an undergraduate degree in physical sciences or an engineering discipline. Those with an undergraduate degree in other disciplines but, with an attainment of A-level physics or equivalent, or sufficient working experience in the related fields, will be considered on a case by case basis.

Applicants whose entrance qualification is obtained from an institution where the medium of instruction is not English should also fulfill the following minimum English proficiency requirement:

  • a score of 79 (Internet-based test) in the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL)@#; or
  • an overall band score of 6.5 in International English Language Testing System (IELTS)@; or
  • a score 450 in the new College English Test (CET6) of Chinese mainland or a pass in the old CET-6 test; or
  • other equivalent qualifications.

@TOEFL and IELTS scores are considered valid for two years. Applicants are required to provide their English test results obtained within the two years preceding the start of the University's application period.
# Applicants are required to arrange for the Educational Testing Service (ETS) to send their TOEFL results directly to the University. The TOEFL institution code for CityU is 3401 (Graduate School Admissions) and the Department Code is 99.

Fellowship awards are available for local students admitted to this programme under the Fellowships Scheme supported by the HKSAR Government. This programme in the priority area of “Sustainable City” is one of the targeted programmes listed under the Fellowships Scheme with 4 fellowship awards. Local students admitted to the programme in full-time, part-time or combined study mode may be invited to submit applications for the fellowships.
