Delegations from the China Association for Science and Technology (CAST) visited City University of Hong Kong (CityUHK) on 3 December to gain an in-depth understanding of the University's current research and development status.

The CAST delegation was led by Mr Wan Gang, President of CAST, and Ms Luo Hui, Director of the Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan Exchange Office of CAST. They received a warm welcome from Mr Lester Garson Huang, Chairman of the Council; Professor Freddy Boey, President of CityUHK; Professor Anderson Shum Ho-cheung, Vice-President (Research); Professor Chan Chi-hou, Vice-President (Community Engagement); Professor Lu Jian, Dean of College of Engineering; Professor Kenneth Leung Mei-yee, Dean of the School of Energy and Environment.

President Boey expressed heartfelt gratitude for the delegation’s visit and introduced CityUHK’s recent outstanding achievements. He mentioned that CityUHK ranked 10th in Asia in the latest Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) 2025 Asian University Rankings, placing it among the top 1% of universities in Asia. CityUHK is committed to promoting inspiring, interactive, and innovative education, with the goal of becoming a world-class institution known for research excellence and outstanding professional education. Through the “Distinguished Visiting Professors Scheme”, CityUHK has successfully attracted over 50 top scholars from institutions such as ETH Zurich, Harvard Medical School, MIT, National University of Singapore, University College London, Cambridge University, and Oxford University to serve as distinguished visiting professors, further enhancing its academic influence.

Professor Shum elaborated on CityUHK’s international characteristics and its academic and research achievements. He pointed out that CityUHK was recognised as “Most International University in the World 2024” by Times Higher Education (THE). Nearly 210 scholars from CityUHK were named among the “World’s Top 2% Most-cited Scientists”. Compared to the overall number of teaching and research staff at the University, this is the highest proportion of top scientists in Hong Kong, demonstrating the University’s exceptional research capabilities. Additionally, Professor Shum noted that in the latest “2024 Highly Cited Researchers” list published by Clarivate, CityUHK had 32 scholars selected, maintaining its position as the top in Hong Kong for nine consecutive years, showcasing the excellent influence of CityUHK’s teaching and research team in the international academic community and the broad recognition of its research outcomes.

The delegation then visited CityUHK’s State Key Laboratory of Marine Pollution, the State Key Laboratory of Terahertz and Millimeter Waves, and the Hong Kong Branch of National Precious Metals Material Engineering Research Center. They also held a seminar at CityUHK, inviting representatives from the technology sector to participate.
