Research funding at the City University of Hong Kong Shenzhen Research Institute (CityUSRI) totalled nearly RMB33 million (about HK$42 million) in 2013, a record high for CityUSRI and an increase of about RMB1.2 million from the previous year’s total.

 

In addition, 88 grants were obtained, an increase of 49% from the previous year.

 

“I am proud of our colleagues and I would like to express my gratitude to those who were successful in obtaining the research grants and contracts,” said Professor Lu Jian, Vice-President (Research & Technology) and the Director of CityUSRI. “The continuous support from the mainland is recognition for our outstanding faculty and research colleagues, and of the exceptionally high quality of their work.”

 

Of particular note is our on-going success at attracting interest from “Programme 973”, also known as the National Basic Research Programme. CityUSRI has obtained one 973 project for the last three consecutive years. Programme 973, one of the most influential, and competitive, funding programmes in China, supports significant basic research.

 

Professor Lu Jian, concurrently Chair Professor in the Department of Mechanical and Biomedical Engineering, and Professor Michael Yang Mengsu, Head of the Department of Biomedical Sciences, obtained 973 grants in 2011 and 2012 respectively; and in 2013, Professor Xue Quan, Chair Professor in the Department of Electronic Engineering, obtained funding for his project titled “Implantable Quasi-lumped Parameter Functional Cell – Theory and Construction Method”.

 

What’s more, CityUSRI won its first Major Programme of the National Natural Science Foundation of China with funding of RMB2.8 million for a project titled “Theoretical Foundations of Contemporary Logistics Management for Harmonized Development of Economy, Society and Environment” led by Professor Frank Chen Youhua, Acting Head and Professor in the Department of Management Sciences.
