CityU's Department of Electronic Engineering showcased its expertise in eight projects at the Hong Kong Electronics Fair 2000, held from 11-14 October.

Professor Ron Hui exhibited his Dimmable Electronic Ballast for Fluorescent Lamps, a new energy saving product, and his Compact Electronic Ballast for High-Density-Discharge lamps. Dr Peter Tsang showed his 3D Screen Adapter for Domestic Television, a planar screen adapter that allows viewers to see 3D pictures. Dr K F Tsang displayed his intriguingly named Bluetooth Cookies, which allow electrical devices to be connected by means of wireless, and his WAP- Based Intelligent Theatre, which is used to control the operation of electronic devices within a range of building types.

A Non-radiated Water Heater using the very safe Induction Heating Technique, the brainchild of Professor Edward Yung, Dr Henry Chung and Mr S C Yip, was also on display. Finally, The Centre for Electronic Packaging and Assemblies, Failure Analysis and Reliability Engineering and the Smart Card Design Centre were represented by Professor Archie Chan and Dr L M Cheng, respectively.

Professor Y C Chan, Assistant Head (Applied Research and Public Relationship) in the Department of Electronic Engineering, said the exhibition had attracted many visitors who expressed interest in future collaboration. "It enabled us to promote the University's strengths in applied research and technical support among both the local and overseas electronics industry," he said.
