Greater Bay Biotechnology (GBB) is an early-stage business incubated by the City University of Hong Kong (CityU) HK Tech 300 programme and the HKSTP IDEATION programme. GBB focuses on the research, development and commercialisation of transdermal drug and cell delivery technology for the treatment of both localised and systemic diseases. Of particular focus is the innovative delivery of biological drug or biologics, which includes peptide/protein, nucleic acid, mRNA, cell, and cell-derived vesicles, many of which can be used in the treatment of major diseases such as diabetes, cancers and infectious diseases.
GBB is developing a convenient, patient-friendly, pain-free, and effective diabetic treatment solution - Insulin cryo-microneedles (CMN) – to achieve minimally invasive transdermal delivery of insulin. The device has two parts: a pen-like applicator and a replaceable CMN patch. The applicator helps patients conveniently handle the CMN patch, and a built-in refrigeration component in the device preserves the frozen CMN. Compared with present insulin injection devices available in the market, which may lead to skin thickening, for example, our Insulin CMN device has the advantages of being easy-to-operate, pain-free, and reusable, and has fast absorption onset and no implantable parts.
