Raymond Lau Yau-shing was diagnosed with Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) in his early childhood and had to undergo behavioural therapy. The financial burden of the therapy sessions, coupled with his parents’ divorce, made him feel stressed and helpless. Fortunately, he managed to overcome these adversities, changed from a band 3 to a band 1 secondary school, and eventually joined the BBA Global Business Systems Management (GBSM) programme at CityUHK.

Raymond’s childhood experience fuelled his aspiration to serve the community and make a positive impact on society. He joined the "C Me Fly Perseverance Scheme", co-organised by the China Merchants Charity Foundation and the Hok Yau Club (學(xué)友社), and was selected a “Perseverance Star” in the Senior Group. As part of the project, he co-organised volunteer services with Ginkgo House (銀杏館), which included lunch box distribution and sharing sessions. These experiences deepened his understanding of social enterprises, their operations and the significance of the volunteers’ efforts, and helped him grasp the differences between social enterprises and commercial businesses.

Raymond highly valued the exchange programmes he participated in and considered them a highlight of his time at University. During his third year at CityUHK, he joined exchange programmes at McGill University in Canada and the University of Warwick in the UK. At McGill, he was exposed to a vibrant and dynamic business environment, where he had the chance to collaborate with students from various backgrounds. This not only enhanced his teamwork and communication skills, but also provided him with a global perspective on business management. The University of Warwick, on the other hand, offered a unique learning environment that emphasised innovation and entrepreneurship, enabling him to develop a creative mindset and think critically about global business challenges.

The combination of academic training, exchange programmes, and extra-curricular activities at CityUHK has transformed Raymond both professionally and personally, and equipped him to become a responsible and compassionate leader in the future.
