"Feline Herpesvirus and Chlamydia - The latest on Diagnosis and Treatment"

Feline herpesvirus and Chlamydia are common pathogens of cats all around the world producing a wide variety of ocular diseases from mild conjunctivitis to blinding keratitis or symblepharon. We will discuss how we reach a diagnosis and how they are best managed. Is there a good PCR test? Should I use a topical or systemic antiviral drug? How frequently? For how long? Do I also need to use antibiotics? Is lysine effective? What drug clears Chlamydia? What do I do when they don't get better? We will address all of these questions in a logical fashion choosing only the clinically relevant material from all of the latest research.

"Trust, help, friendship, and cooperation: positives of the animal kingdom"

Throughout history, humans have witnessed numerous conflicts that have led to aggressive interventions, such as war, often resulting in the collapse of societies. Fortunately, evolution has equipped us with skills for conflict resolution, alliance formation, and, believe it or not, hyper-cooperation to build or maintain societies. Only recently have we begun seeking parallels in non-human societies to investigate the evolutionary trajectory of such positive skills. Keeping evolution as the backdrop, Dr. Debottam Bhattacharjee will talk about human-animal trust building, and helping, friendships, and cooperation in animal societies, all based on empirical evidence.

"Dermatological problems of brachycephalic dogs and how to address them"

Brachycephalic dogs are still very popular, especially because of their "babyface" appearance and personality. Owners are often unaware of the serious health conditions brachycephaly brings along and how this affects the welfare of their beloved ones. These dogs do not only suffer from brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome, but also spinal, dental, gastrointestinal, ophthalmological, cardiovascular and dermatological disorders.
In this webinar we will focus on dermatological diseases associated with brachycephaly since many of these diseases occur on a daily base but are often underrated. Genetic, parasitic, and autoimmune diseases, immune deficiencies, vasculitis, allergies, secondary infections, claw and anal sac diseases, skin folding, alopecia, pruritus and otitis externa/media have all been reflected as problems in brachycephalic dog breeds. These skin conditions can become chronic and difficult to treat, leading to pruritus and pain, affecting the normal behaviour of these dogs and their quality of life.
The knowledge and understanding of these diseases will not only help with treatment considerations, but also client education and are an important step forward in animal welfare and how breed standards for those dogs should be revised.

"Interventional Radiology Procedures in Veterinary Patients: When, Why, If"

When to Intervene in sick patients is a complex and sensitive issue. There are a number of considerations including available treatments, available evidence-based rationale, owners desires and ethical issues (autonomy, beneficence, and non-maleficence). The goal of this talk is to discuss the role of interventional radiology in these cases and how to balance these considerations.

"Donkey Tales: The labour and gendering of donkeys in central Ethiopia"

In Ethiopia, donkeys are vital to people's everyday lives performing domestic labour (such as transporting water and firewood for household use) and productive labour (such as transporting goods for sale) alongside their human co-workers. Within this multispecies relationship, gendered divisions of labour and socio-cultural constructions shape the ways donkeys and humans work with one another in rural and urban environments. Drawing on equine welfare assessments, semi-structured interviews, and participatory workshops, findings reveal human gender and class intersect where an equivalence is drawn between women and donkeys. Through this alignment, women and donkeys are mutually marginalised and their wellbeing compromised.
This presentation will explore human-donkey labour relations and offer considerations for improvements in interspecies work.

"What did this pandemic teach us about pet welfare?"

The Covid-19 pandemic has no doubts increased public awareness related to One Health and One Welfare issues. In this webinar, Dr Sara Platto at the College of Life Sciences of Jianghan University (Wuhan, China) presented her results from the study carried out during the 2020-2021 period in China, which showed how companion animals might have affected the lives of their owners during the lockdown, and how the restrictions could have positively or negatively influenced the quality of life of the dogs and cats.

In this presentation, veterinarian and ethologist Prof Paul McGreevy introduce this important framework that that recognizes that animal welfare, biodiversity and the environment are intertwined with human wellbeing and community resilience, and ultimately to promote the ethical treatment of all animal.

"Thoroughbred Racehorse Welfare in Training and Racing"

The life of a thoroughbred racehorse evolves across a broad industry, from breeding barn into training stables, then potentially through to multiple secondary careers after retirement from horseracing. Each of these steps have their own unique welfare challenges and considerations.
In this talk, representatives at the HKJC will highlight the importance of recognizing the welfare issues facing racehorses in training and having an understanding of the perception and ethical viewpoints of stakeholders and the general public for developing strategies to improve racehorse welfare. Please join us to learn more from the guest speakers, there will be a follow-up seminar later on about the life of a retired racehorse.
