Mr. C. M. Chan (陳澤銘律師) is the Immediate Past President of The Law Society of Hong Kong. Mr. Chan first joined the Council of the Law Society in 2016 and he was elected President in 2021 and was re-elected in 2022 and 2023.
Education
Mr. Chan graduated from the London School of Economics and Political Science (LLM 1993), the University of Oxford (MBA 2008) and Harvard University (MPA 2015). In 1994, he returned to Hong Kong after completing the Solicitors Finals Examination in England.
Work Experience
Mr. Chan is qualified to practice as solicitor in Hong Kong (1997) and England and Wales (2002). He is also qualified to practice as lawyer in the Greater Bay Area, Guangdong Province, China (2021).
Mr. Chan is a commercial lawyer specializing in private client work. Mr. Chan has extensive experience in advising high net-worth clients and corporations in relation to their wealth management, investments, tax, trust, assets preservation, cross-border transactions, AML/KYC compliance and philanthropic issues. He worked for various Family Offices of prominent families in Hong Kong. Mr. Chan is now a consultant of a Hong Kong law firm, a London law firm and a law firm in the Greater Bay Area in Guangdong Province, China.
Social Services
Mr. Chan has served on a number of Hong Kong statutory bodies, including the Board of Review (Inland Revenue), Law Reform Commission, Independent Police Complaints Council (Chairman of the Legal Committee), Trade and Industry Advisory Board, Social Welfare Department Investment Working Group of Special Needs Trust etc. He is also a Senior Consultant of Hong Kong Policy Research Institute, a Hong Kong think tank and the Chairman of the Disciplinary Committee, Football Association of Hong Kong, China. He is an Adjunct Professor of Hang Seng University and City University of Hong Kong.
International
Mr. Chan is actively involved in different international law associations. He was an officer of the International Bar Association Corporate Social Responsibility Committee (2007 - 2012) and is a LAWASIA Executive Committee Member. Mr Chan is also on the panel of pro bono lawyers for the Ombudsman to the United Nations Security Council's ISIL (Da'esh) and Al-Qaida Sanctions Committee. In 2024, as the then President of the Law Society of Hong Kong, Mr Chan took up the Rotating Chairmanship of POLA (The Presidents of Law Associations in Asia) with Hong Kong as the host jurisdiction of its annual conference.
