We are pleased to announce that Professor Johnny Chan, an Emeritus Professor of the School of Energy and Environment (SEE) at City University of Hong Kong, has been elected as an Honorary Member of the Asia Oceania Geosciences Society (AOGS) for the year 2024. This prestigious award is a testament to Professor Chan's exceptional international standing in the field of geosciences and his invaluable contributions to the society.

Previously, Professor Chan was the Chair Professor of Atmospheric Science and the Founding Dean of SEE, and the Director of the Guy Carpenter Asia-Pacific Climate Impact Centre, of City University of Hong Kong. Between 2002 and 2008, he was also the Director of the Shanghai Typhoon Institute of the China Meteorological Administration.

Professor Chan is a long-standing member of the AOGS and his contribution to generate activity to enrich AOGS meetings and to raise profile of geosciences in the Asia Oceania Region is significant. He was the President of the Atmospheric Science Section, AOGS from 2016 to 2018.

Professor Chan is internationally renowned in the research areas of typhoons and monsoons, including the impact of global warming on tropical cyclone and monsoon climate, and has contributed significantly to development of geoscience knowledge relevant to the Asia Oceania Region, and globally. Results of his research have been published in two books, 26 book chapters and over 280 journal papers. According to the Essential Science Indicators, he ranks the top in the world in the number of SCI-listed journal articles related to tropical cyclones.

Internationally, Professor Chan was a member of the Tropical Meteorology Research Working Group of the World Meteorological Organization and the Chair of its Tropical Cyclone Panel between 2012 and 2018. He is also an associate editor of three international journals and a member of the Editorial Board of World Scientific Series on Earth System Science in Asia.

Professor Chan’s honours include Fellow of the American Meteorological Society, Honorary Fellow of the UK Energy Institute, recipient of the International Journal of Climatology Award of the Royal Meteorological Society, Distinguished Meteorologist awarded by the Hong Kong Observatory, and a Senior Research Fellowship awarded by the Croucher Foundation.
