ABSTRACT: Mass and heat transfer in fibrous porous media can be found in numerous industrial and engineering applications such as textile, paper and pulp, building materials and more recently in the electrodes of proton exchange membrane fuel cells. In these applications, modeling becomes increasingly important as it provides an efficient and cost effective way for evaluating new designs or testing new materials. In this talk, we present our recent work on heat and moisture transport model in fibrous clothing assemblies. We formulate this problem as multi-phase flows in fibrous porous media with phase change. The model is based on a previous study with significant modification to take into account the air resistance to moisture transport as well as the capillary effect on liquid water motion. A splitting semi-implicit finite volume scheme is proposed for solving the gas (vapor and air) and energy equations while the water equations are solved separately. Qualitative comparison between the numerical results and the experimental measurements are also given.
