Abstract: Much has changed in the field of differential equations in the last fifteen years. Thanks to the advent of the computer and especially computer graphics, as well as to the introduction of certain qualitative techniques from dynamical systems theory, the introductory course in this field has changed dramatically. The need for specialized tricks to solve very special differential equations can, in many cases, be replaced by a much more cohesive and graphical introduction to the subject. Among the benefits is that we can now introduce such topics as the Lorenz attractor and nonlinear bifurcations to calculus students, which gives these younger students a glimpse of the excitement of contemporary mathematics.
