Honorary degrees
CityU will confer honorary doctoral degrees on Dr Yukio Hatoyama, Mr Koo Ming-kown, and Professor Myron S. Scholes in recognition of their significant contributions to education and the well-being of society. The award ceremony will be held in November during the University's Congregation. Dr Yukio Hatoyama, President of the East Asian Community Institute, will receive an Honorary Doctor of Laws. He was Prime Minister of Japan from September 2009 to June 2010, and the first ever Prime Minister from the Democratic Party of Japan. Mr Koo, founder of Nam Tai Electronics, Inc, will receive an Honorary Doctor of Social Science. As a philanthropic industrialist, Mr Koo has supported the development of education in Hong Kong for many years by making significant donations to the higher education sector and schools. Professor Scholes, Frank E. Buck Professor of Finance, Emeritus, at the Stanford University Graduate School of Business, will receive an Honorary Doctor of Letters. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences in 1997 for his work on a new theory to value derivatives.

President's Lecture Series
Professor Nozer Darabsha Singpurwalla, Chair Professor of Risk Analysis and Management Science in the Department of Systems Engineering and Engineering Management, will deliver a lecture titled "Subjective Probability: Its Axioms and Acrobatics" in the President's Lecture Series on 23 September. He is concurrently Distinguished Research Professor, Columbian College of Arts and Sciences, The George Washington University; Professor, Departments of Statistics, and of Decision Sciences, The George Washington University; and Director, Institute for Reliability and Risk Analysis, The George Washington University.

New Dean of Students
Dr Raymond Chan Kwok-hong has been appointed as Dean of Students with effect from 1 September. This appointment is concurrent with Dr Chan's appointment as Associate Professor in the Department of Applied Social Studies. Reporting to the Vice-President (Student Affairs), Dr Chan will provide advice on policy development and administration to the Office of Vice-President (Student Affairs), particularly on matters relating to social, recreational and co-curricular programmes for students, counselling and student welfare activities. Dr Chan will also play an important role in the implementation of the Strategic Plan on student learning.

New Director of CCIV
Professor Li Hsiao-ti has been appointed as Director of the Chinese Civilisation Centre with effect from 1 September. Professor Li received his PhD from Harvard University and joined the Chinese Civilisation Centre in July 2013 as Professor.

Asian migration and diasporas conference
Experts from Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore, Korea, Japan, Australia, the US and the UK will discuss issues arising from Asian migration and global Asian diasporas at the Asian Migration and the Global Asian Diasporas Conference from 6 to 7 September at CityU. The event is co-hosted by the Southeast Asia Research Centre, the Department of Asian and International Studies, and the International Organization for Migration.

Art installation
Twenty-six photographic art works donated by graduates and faculty from the School of Creative Media (SCM), including winners of previous SCM visual showcases, the Hong Kong Contemporary Art Award and the DAAD award from the German Academic Exchange Service, have been installed in the Nam Shan Yuen Building.
